Summer School Update

Muriel, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerCan y'all believe summer school is almost over?!?! It feels like it was just yesterday starting my first session of summer school...and now the second session is almost over. I've been pretty busy trying to keep up with my studies this summer...that's probably one of the reasons why you haven't seen my face on the screen that much! lol...So, how does it feel going to summer school, while all of my friends are out partying and having fun? This question has been on my mind since I started summer school.

...and the answer is....

I FEEL GREAT!

Just knowing that I'm going to obtain my degree much sooner than them, makes me feel very successful lol! But, it's not like I don't have time to have fun... people think going to summer school will ruin their entire summer…that's not the case. You just have to manage your time wisely and try to stay focus.
For me, the first summer session was kinda rocky because it was difficult to keep my mind from drifting ...I would find myself thinking about where I wanted to go for my summer vacation.

lol I tried not to let my thoughts distract me, but it was kinda hard when your in a British Literature class (British=BORING) LOL! Not a very exciting course, especially during summertime! Now, I'm taking psychology, which is very interesting! Not boring at all...I will update y’all if that changes! lol

Here are some tips that I think you should know if you’re considering on taking summer courses next year.

1. Be ready to work! Summer classes are very demanding because it's a whole semester of information crammed into 1 month.
2.Sometimes summer classes are longer than 2 hours, so make sure you bring a snack, drink, or something that will keep you from snoozing. (Just don't be noisy lol)
3.I believe most summer classes are Monday-Thursday (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday YOUR OFF yay! You can have a mini vacation those 3 days!)
4.Keep a positive attitude about your class because if you think negative all the time (Example: OMG THIS CLASS IS SO BORING!!! OMG I HATE THIS SUBJECT!!! OMG THIS INSTRUCTOR IS SO LAME) you will probably get a NEGATIVE grade lol!
5. Talk to your classmates! You will be seeing the same faces almost everyday for a whole month. Exchange numbers or e-mails...start a support group! If you have a question about an assignment, they can be a great help!

P.S:I think those are all of my personal summer school tips. If you think I'm missing anything, feel free to add on to the list!

On the go.

Just as I was excited about the summer season I'm even more anxious to see what fall semester has in store. As summer comes to an end, the fall season rushes through as tidal waves do to the shores during a storm. The best time to register for fall classes is now. Classes for the fall semester start August 25, 2008, and a lot of classes are already closed due to max registration. So sign up as soon as you can to avoid any possible chances of not getting into the courses you wish to take. This is Casey, saying if you don't want to drown stay away from waters you can't handle.

A Few Philisophical Statements...

Always take the time to smell the roses... and sooner or later you'll inhale a bee. If a motorist cuts you off, just turn the other cheek... nothing gets the message across like a good mooning. If genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, I must be sharing elevators with a lot of bright people. It's always darkest just before dawn...so if you're gonna steal the neighbors' newspaper, that's the time to do it. It takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown... and fewer still to ignore someone completely. Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked up into jet engines. I believe no problem is so large or so difficult that it can't be blamed on someone else. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. My father always said laughter is the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us ended up dying of tuberculosis. It takes a big man to cry.. .but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man. When I'm feeling down I like to whistle... it makes my neighbor's dog run to the end of his chain and gag himself.

UH

Transferring from North Harris to UH is much harder than I thought. I am officially a junior and I am majoring in Political Science with a minor in History and a double major in Spanish. UH has a lot of different fees and I am just so glad that I decided to go to North Harris for my first two years...it sure saved me a lot of money. For example, just to get a parking permit I have to pay $142.00 annually and the classes are far more expensive than North Harris. There's an advisor for everything so basically one needs to talk to more than one person to get a simple answer to any question.

Well...I am still excited and cant wait to do the official move...

Gasless Overheated Flat Tires

Garza, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerI do not know what is going on with the cars now in days. But older model vehicles are becoming scrap metal quicker than two shakes of a lamb's tail. I am serious! Ever since summer session II, I have noticed atleast two cars on the side of the freeway every week. I have seen at least three cars broken down in the middle of the freeway causing painful traffic. These cars literally stopped in the middle lanes and stayed there. There was a guy working on his car with the hood open on the middle of the freeway! Wow! You know you can run over people on the freeway and get away with it. Pedestrians are not even suppose to cross there so you would not even get in trouble. This month of patriotic July, I have noticed over fifteen cars pulled to the side of the freeway because of flat tires or engine problems. I have also noticed that there have been over five car accidents on the freeway.
Sometimes it happens early in the morning before class, but usually it is around 3-6 when everyone is rushing home trying to avoid traffic but instead they are causing traffic. Don't you just hate it when there is a traffic stop or an accident where someone is on the side of the freeway and they are all the way on the right side and the very left side of the freeway is slower than the right? That ever happen to you? Like the drivers are interested and want to slow down and see what happened and act like they are on-scene traffic accident investigators or something. And they try to solve the crash and try to judge how it happened and who's fault it was as they drive pass the scene. I hate those people. Then once you pass the scene you are in a desserted lane and you suddenly feel that the reason why you were put on this earth was to race down this empty freeway at full speed because in the back of your mind something is telling you that all the cops are at the scene of the accident.
But that is beside the point I am talking about the 90's models here people. These cars are expiring if I may. They are becoming out of date, it almost feels like the manufacturer design them for that purpose. Well no duh, huh? What I am trying to get across here is that you make sure to maintain your vehicle because I feel the heat is causing alot of these traffic problems or maybe the oil is cheap or mixed with crap because of greed and nobody is noticing it yet. Basically just check your tires and change your filter, because it helps your car drive more efficiently and helps save gas. Clean your car inside and out, thats not that important but do it anyways. Make sure you put gas before you reach the last three little sticks. In my neighborhood, only crackheads run out of gas, so if you do not want people to assume you are a crackhead, keep her filled. And please people, especially if you are young, do not drive your car when it is overheating. I do not care if you think you are going to make it to school and it will cool down by the time you get out of class. Just do not do it, because you will end up on the side of the road causing traffic and ruining everyone's day.
Avoid traffic at all costs. Get your self a little gadget that lets you know if there is traffic. And I do not know if you have noticed but there are big signs on the freeway that inform drivers about accidents and traffic, so maybe that will help. Alot of people do not read the signs and end up in the delay that could have been prevented. Go eat or stop at a store when the road is packed, don't stress yourself out. Stay at school studying for another hour and a half if it will prevent waiting in traffic. Be smart about it and take good care of your car. She might eat alot but she gets you home, so keep her healthy.

The Solution.

Life can be rough. At times it can dish out some of the cruelest hardships and situations. As humans we have to understand how those difficult times are brought forth. When times get hard most people love to blame the situation on someone or something else. I believe when you point your finger at some one else you have three pointing back at you.

This means that usually that the situation is three times more your fault than the person you tried to blame. Example after the 9/11 incident President George W. Bush attempted to accuse former President Bill Clinton for what happened to the world trade center. In this situation President Bush can have a valid logic. After all the U.S.S. Cole was struck on Clinton's watch. Although Clinton could of possibly overlooked some possible terrorist threats, the event happened while Bush was in office. And it profits us any when we blame other people for our mishaps.

I do believe that there are exceptions to these rules of thought. For the most part our problems come from us. If we start taking account for what we do this world would be a much better place. Solution's to epidemics are brought out by people who refuse to sit back and blame others for there problems. Instead they stand against adversity and strive for justice at all cost.

Check the Time on this BLOG

Hi everyone! Wow...it's currently 2:14am. I know this is not a diary, and this is not a time to be awake. Many students have studied past 11:00pm. Right now I was falling asleep that is why I decided to take a break to BLOG!!! I just wanted to show the reality of having to work this much to achieve our goals.

I am curently taking two courses, Pre-cal and History 1301. Together the workload is HUGE. Both classes are 6 weeks long and we learn so much in one day. I am not used to this, but I am beginning to get into it.

My point is that at some point we all have to give it our all to succeed. When I was in elementary, I thought that life will be as simple as counting to 100 or writing one sentence with six words. Unfortunelty, as we grow older and wiser, we realize that there are these challenges to face. Everyone experiences something different.

I believe that the best thing is achieving our goals through these challenges and knowing that we did it. It feels so good, like if we were letting go of the feeling inside. That stressy feeling we have when we over do ourselves. I will be glad once I know I made my A's!

For those who think about giving up, DON'T! Keep pulling through and when you reach the finish line and pass the applauding crowds, remember the winner in you and what made you be that WINNER!!!

Fall in Place

As the summer session winds down, and fall is on the up rising, I progress nicely towards my graduation date. Fall is going to be very challenging for me as I take on 13 semester hours of school work.

By far this is going to be my best semester in my scholastic life up to this point. My self esteem has grown miraculously since coming to North Harris. Life has allowed me develop certain characteristics. One thing I certainly picked up is the spirit of progression.

Progression has given me the strength to persevere through hard times and difficult tasks. It also teaches me not to dwell on the past. Though the past may stain, it's not the outcome of your future. Progression also makes me flexible and non complacent because you never know how life is going to approach you. Remember success comes to those who refuse to fail.

The Smartest Dog Ever

I love jokes...this one is one of my personal favorites!!

The Smartest Dog Ever

As a butcher is shooing a dog from his shop, he sees $10 and a note in his mouth, reading: "10 lamb chops, please."

Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes the shop. He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light, look both ways, and trot across the road to a bus stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench. When a bus arrives, he walks around to the front and looks at the number, then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck.

As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery. After awhile he stands on his back paws to push the "stop" button, then the butcher follows him off.

The dog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the stoop. He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself -Whap!- against the door. He does this again and again. No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and starts cursing and pummeling the dog.

The butcher runs up screams at the guy: "What the hell are you doing? This dog's a genius!"
The owner responds, "Genius, my a##. It's the second time this week he's forgotten his key!"

My experiences in North Harris were pretty good. I am really glad that I decided to go to North Harris because it was a great school that I felt comfortable enough to start my career path. When I graduated from high school, I had no clue of what my life was going to be...now I feel more confident and ready to get more serious about my career and life.

Credits accepted

I went to UH today and I am really happy because all my credits were accepted. My advisor was so amazed because she told me that it was really weird to see someone so prepared and all their classes transfering. Now I see that transferring is really tricky so one needs to be active and know what classes are worth taking and will be accepted to another institution.

Homecoming

I love Chicago Illinois. Is a very beautiful city...I just love everything about it...the food (the best Pizza in the world)...the people ... just the whole thing. Kanye West sings a nice song about Chicago is called "Homecoming". When I went to Chicago a couple weeks ago my cousin put this song for me because basically "I was going back home." I just can't wait to go back again...especially now that is summer ...is just very beautiful....

New Era

Ernesto, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerGas prices are become stable once again, but everything else is going up. Every retailer is looking for new ways to save their company money. There are some commercial airplanes that have started charging extras for luggage as well as carry on luggage. In addition to the charge of luggage, they have started to say that they might be charging more for restroom uses. Another way those retailers are fighting gas prices is by the cereal boxes selling them the same prices, but with fewer ounces in the box. On the other hand, the new milk jug that is design to fit more milk jugs for transportation which would cost consumer less than the old jugs is already in the market. In my opinion, I think this is only the beginning of changes we are seeing in this time and age.

I love jokes! I think laughing is a very healthy thing to do so.... here goes a joke I got from comedycentral.com that I personally believe is really funny:

Things Found Only In America

1. Only in America......can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

2. Only in America......are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink.

3. Only in America......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

4. Only in America......do people order double cheese burgers, large fries, and a diet Coke.

5. Only in America......do banks leave both doors to the vault open and then chain the pens to the counters.

6. Only in America......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

7. Only in America......do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

8. Only in America......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

9. Only in America......do we use the word "politics" to describe the process so well: "poli" in Latin meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "bloodsucking creatures."

10. Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

Campus tour

Today I did a campus tour for elementary kids and I had a really nice time. They were just so nice and eager to learn that it made me realize why I want to become a teacher in the first place. I still haven't decided for what grade I am going to teach, but elementary sounds pretty good. I am just really happy that I just got two more years to go, and I will officially become a certified teacher. I went to UH today and I absolutely loved it. It so BIG that I got lost and I sure did a lot of exercise by just walking around the campus. I am really excited to move to another school and start new. I know I will miss North Harris but I love changes and I am really excited to see what my future holds.

Heat

Garza, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerI am not going to blog about the summer heat again. I will do that later when it gets hotter. The movie Heat was this week's movie of the week (MOW). Man is this movie awesome. I mean I truly give my personal and honest feedback on the films I see and if I watch one that is dull, trust me, I will tell you. But like Rambo, this movie was action packed. It is shot in Los Angeles where violence is pretty high. It starts out with a couple of guys robbing an armored truck full of cash. Well they succeed but the new guy kills the cops. So there all mad at him and they try to kill him. He is an ex-convict that ends up getting away and now wants to kill them. And there's this cop (Al Pacino) that is trying to lock these guys up. The group of guys that rob the armored truck begin to hit up other places. Robert DeNiro is the gang leader and he begins to fall in love with a woman he met. There are times that you hope the story did not end up the way it did. I love the part when they hit up the bank. It is so crazy but I won't ruin it for you. The movie that I checked out was found at the LSC-North Harris library. I got it in cassette. It comes in two tapes like Titanic, remember? It is one heck of a film if you like movies with Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, and Robert DeNiro. And even though this film is old, made in 1995, it is one of the best films I have watched. Check out the trailer and see if it interests you. Remember you can find it in VHS at the library here on campus.

What A Summer !

Life is good for me at this moment. My job at admissions is wonderful, and i am looking forward to summer section two. Summer one was full of fun events. The most memorable activity I participated in was the juneteenth celebration. This is were I meet Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. Also I had the opportunity to tell a lot of people about the s.t.a.r. program.

My History 1301 class was great. D.R. Mcginnely is a great professor, who teaches with passion and concern. As always learning is a pleasure for me. The class I have for summer session two is GOVT 2302. I' am looking forward to a great term and learning more about our society through a governmental point of view.

To start off the second part of summer. I had a chance to give a group of kids from various elementary and middle schools a field trip of our campus. The kids really enjoyed it, and I enjoyed being able to work with them. I also had the chance through the school's Media Director to talk on how I feel about the school North Harris Lone Star College (In front of a camera). Of course that was a great experience.

Live smart, Live wise but most of all Live good. This Casey saying PEACE AND GOD BLESS.

West Nile Virus

Garza, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerMan I am finally done with Microbiology. I am more aware of the risk of infection in my entire environment. Like for instance, the West Nile Virus that is transmitted by the Culex mosquito. It is important for me to know about this. I have always wondered what it was and finally I found out that it causes Encephalitis, and encephalitis causes fever, headache and photophobia which causes sensitivity to light on your eyes. The seriousness of encephalitis is an acute or rapid inflammation of the brain which leads to brain damage due to the enlargement pushing against the skull. It can lead to death. This is why the news always talks about outbreaks of the disease like we are in Racoon city or something. They tell us to make sure that you do not have any filled buckets of water sitting around in the backyard as they are reservoirs for their reproductive cycle. And that little white truck that drives down your street spraying chemicals in the air at 3 o' clock in the morning is spraying pesticides that kill or repel the culex mosquito from the area. I mean the cases have not shown up yet, but it is better to take precautions now than to wait for someone on the news channel to tell you. The reason why they warn people is if there are cases of the mosquito affecting the population. Do you want to be the victim that gets bit so that everybody else knows? So take care and learn about your environment and remember that the best medicine is prevention. This is GARZA from LSC-North Harris keeping you informed. I'll see you at The Medical Center.

The fireworks display in downtown Houston was a blast. In the past, I had an opporErnesto, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggertunity to have been to the firework display in Chicago, Illinois when I was just twelve years old. The time past and you can said that it had been over six years since the last time I went to go see a firework display in downtown. My favorite firework was the one that makes a bunch of heart shapes that really caught my attention because the color was actually red. New cafeteria

Sheldon, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerI walked by the cafeteria this morning and just shook my head. As hard as I tried to envision the new state of the art facility, I just couldn't come up with the picture. It's a total disaster zone over there and I'm also wondering if it will be completed on schedule. We were told that it would be open at the start of the fall semester but..................

I hope I'm wrong about this but I asked random individuals their opinion and they all agreed. Nobody thought the project would be completed on time. It might get completed by Sept 1st or maybe it won't. The most important thing is that it just get completed and hopefully they won't have us waiting too long.

Rambo

Garza, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerAlright everyone, I have devised a plan to blog about a movie that a watch every weekend. I have been doing this ever since school started and I never miss a thursday night without watching a film. Some may be old and some may be just out on dvd or blue ray. I will post the title of the film on the title of the blog. Every week will be a new movie. I will talk about how I felt about it, kind of like a movie critic. I will name these blogs (MOW) or Movie of the Week. This blog is about the movie Rambo. It was so cool, action packed and full of thrilling bloody violence. It is cool because I did not really understand the previous Rambo movies prior to this new one and this film kind explained that Rambo was in the Vietnam War and he fought but never left when it was over. He stayed over there when the rest of the army came home. All I can say is that I really enjoyed it, and come on talk show hosts, Stallone does not look that old in this film. There will be some disturbing scenes and you might jump at one point, so be prepared. In the film, a religious organization went over to help refugees and other natives that had been injured due to genocide. They get captured and Rambo saves them. Check it out when you finish your homework. This is Garza with the MOW. See ya!

???Summer???

Ernesto, Lone Star College-North Harris STAR bloggerWhat a nice day it has been today so far besides the scattered storms. Summer seems to be a season of living life to the fullest. We should all go outside and enjoy this good weather by playing some kind of sports or just enjoyed the environment. The way I enjoy the summer is by playing soccer in the weekends and basketball at the evenings. What is the way you enjoy the beautiful weather this summer?
